Abstract

Astaxanthin is one of the potentially antioxidant carotenoid pigments. Antioxidants are substances that can counter the harmful effects of free radicals or Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). Objective: This study was conducted to determine the antioxidant activity of astaxanthin and its utilization as transparent soap. Methods: Transparent soaps are made by heat method, and with the addition of VCO oil and olive oil. Transparent soap evaluation includes examination of moisture content, free fatty acids, unabsorbed fat, mineral oil, pH value, foam stability and hedonic test. Results: The results of the evaluation of transparent soap with the addition of astaxanthin obtained a water content of 12.35% (w/w), free fatty acid 1.2% (w/w), unabsorbed fat 2.37% (w/w), negative mineral oil test, pH value 9.73 and foam stability 91,72%. For transparent soap preparations without the addition of astaxanthin, obtained a water content of 17.73% (w/w), free fatty acid 0.13% (w/w), unabsorbed fat, 2.13% (w/w) minerals negative, pH value 9.67 and foam stability of 89.37%. Meanwhile, for hedonic test on the 2% (w/w) astaxanthin transparent soap formula for all parameters such as color, odor, texture, the amount of foam and the impression is in the range of preferred criteria. Quantitative test of antioxidant activity was performed by DPPH method (1,1- diphenyl-2-pycrylhydrazyl) and vitamin C as comparison. Based on the results of the test results obtained that astaxanthin has a very strong antioxidant activity with IC50 value of 30.46 ppm. Conclusion: Antioxidant activity of transparent soap preparation decreased intensity from very strong to strong with IC50 value of 70.47 ppm.
