Abstract

Eye examinations as a refractive error screening effort are an essential preventive measure to detect vision problems early, which can significantly impact students' learning activities. Refractive errors, such as myopia, hypermetropia, and astigmatism, are among the most common eye health issues affecting school-age children. If left undetected and untreated, these conditions can negatively affect their academic performance and quality of life. This activity aimed to identify refractive errors among students for timely intervention. The screening was conducted at SMKN 1 Cijulang, Pangandaran, on May 25, 2022, involving 118 students (236 eyes). The results revealed 142 emmetropic eyes (55.56%), 62 eyes with myopia (20.07%), 31 with astigmatism (16.14%), and 1 eye with hypermetropia (0.42%). Additionally, anisometropia was found in 6 students (5.08%), antimetropia in 1 student (0.85%), and amblyopia in 18 students (15.25%). These findings indicate that nearly half of the students examined had refractive errors, with myopia and astigmatism being the most common conditions. This highlights the importance of regular eye examinations in schools to raise students' awareness of eye health and support optimal learning. Follow-up recommendations include providing corrective glasses for students in need and educating them on the importance of maintaining eye health. This program is expected to be implemented systematically in other schools.
